FIFA, Need For Speed, and Battlefield video game developer Electronic Arts Inc, said hackers have stolen several source codes for games and related internal tools.
The hackers are claiming, “You have full capability of exploiting on all EA services,” in various posts on underground hacking forums viewed and reported by Vice’s Motherboard.
The source codes for FIFA 21 and its matchmaking server are in possession with the hackers, according to forum posts.
The cybercriminals also said they have obtained source code and tools for the Frostbite engine, a core software for video games, which powers several EA games, including Battlefield, along with proprietary EA frameworks and software development kits (SDKs).
The source codes and internal tools totaled 780 gigabytes of data and are being adverted for sale in various underground hacking forum posts, Motherboard reported.
EA confirmed to Vice Media’s Motherboard that it had suffered a data breach and said the hack isn’t expected to affect games or the business.
“We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen,” the California-based gaming giant said.
“No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy.”
“No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy. Following the incident, we’ve already made security improvements and do not expect an impact on our games or our business. We are actively working with law enforcement officials and other experts as part of this ongoing criminal investigation,” EA Spokesperson said.
The data breach news has sent Electronic Arts shares down by more than 2.7% at 12:15 pm ET on Thursday.
