After actor Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock at Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has launched a formal investigation into the incident.
Smith smacked Rock on the stage during the show when the comedian joked about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s short hair.
“The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show,” the organization said in a statement on Monday.
“We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”
The organization also holds the right to revoke an award under such circumstances.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Rock declined to report a police complaint against Smith, though the police said they were prepared to investigate if asked later.
Minutes after the incident with Rock, Smith won the best actor award for his performance in the movie “King Richard.”
Pinkett Smith has alopecia, a medical condition that causes hair loss, which she has been vocal about and worked over the years to raise awareness for the disease.
