President Joe Biden authorized additional assistance of $800 million in military assistance on Wednesday after a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“These new capabilities include artillery systems, artillery rounds, and armored personnel carriers. I have also approved the transfer of additional helicopters. In addition, we continue to facilitate the transfer of significant capabilities from our allies and partners around the world,” Biden wrote in a statement announcing the additional arms package.
With the latest package, the total military aid provided by the US to Ukraine, since Russian forces invaded in February, comes down to more than $2.5 billion. The US has provided a total of $3.2 billion to Ukraine since the beginning of Biden’s presidency, according to the White House.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that the package will include 11 Mi-17 helicopters, that were previously earmarked for Afghanistan before the U.S.-backed government collapsed, 18 Howitzers and 40,000 artillery rounds, 500 Javelin missiles, 300 armored vehicles, and 300 Switchblade drones.
The latest military assistance package comes after reports of Russian troops reassembling in the Southern and Eastern regions of Ukraine are doing the rounds.
In its intelligence report, UK Defence Ministry has warned that fighting in eastern Ukraine will intensify over the next two to three weeks as Russia continues to refocus its efforts there.
