The sinking of flagship missile carrier Moskva "will likely lead Russia to review its maritime posture in the Black Sea," the British Ministry of Defense said in its intelligence report on Friday.
The Russian fleet's flagship in the Black Sea sunk due to a fire that the Ukraine claims was caused by a missile strike.
“This incident means Russia has now suffered damage to two key naval assets since invading Ukraine,” the Minister of Defense said in a tweet.
On March 24, Russia's Alligator-class landing ship Saratov was damaged while docked in Berdiansk, a Russian-occupied port on the Sea of Azov.
The UK's defense ministry provided some information on the Soviet-era warship Moskva, stating that “it was one of only three Slava-class cruisers in the Russian navy. Originally commissioned in 1979, the Moskva had completed an extensive refit designed to improve its capability and only returned to operational status in 2021.”
The warship was involved in Russia's 2015 bombardment of Syria, the 2014 invasion of Crimea, and the 2008 conflict with Georgia.
