• The U.S. government has announced sanctions against an Ethereum wallet belonging to the hacking group
U.S. officials allege that North Korean state-backed hacking collective Lazarus Group is responsible for a cryptocurrency hack in which $615 million worth of digital assets were stolen.
The cyberattack was on the popular blockchain game Axie Infinity, which lets users earn money as they play.
Axie Infinity’s Ronin Network had said in a blog post that it lost around $615 million in USDC (a U.S. dollar pegged stable coin) and Ethereum.
The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control had announced new sanctions against an Ethereum wallet belonging to the hacking group Lazarus.
The sanctions prohibit U.S. persons and entities from transacting with this address to ensure the state-sponsored group can’t cash out any further funds they continue to hold onto through US-based crypto exchanges, said Elliptic in a blog post.
Lazarus Group is alleged to be responsible for several major cyberattacks including a 2014 hack on Sony Pictures and the 2017 WannaCry ransomware attacks.
