Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly video message that the “Russian army is blocking any efforts to organize humanitarian corridors” in the vital port city of Mariupol.
“The situation in Mariupol remains unchanged - as severe as possible,” Zelenskyy said. “The occupiers are trying to carry out deportation or even mobilization of the residents who have fallen into their hands.”
Zelenskyy said Russia has not responded to the exchange offer of pro-Russia Ukrainian opposition politician Viktor Medvedchuk, which may save the civilians and defenders of Mariupol.
“The fate of at least tens of thousands of Mariupol residents who were previously relocated to Russian-controlled territory is unknown,” the Ukrainian President said.
Meanwhile, Russia issued a new deadline for Ukrainian fighters in Mariupol to surrender on Wednesday but Ukrainians have sworn not to concede.
