SpaceX signed its first deal to use its Starlink satellite network in an air carrier to provide in-flight wireless internet, the company said on Thursday.
The aerospace company, owned by Tesla Inc (NYSE: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk, signed the deal with semi-private charter company JSX and involves equipping 100 airplanes with Starlink terminals.
The first Starlink-connected plane is expected to take flight by the end of this year.
SpaceX’s Starlink service on JSX flights is pending regulatory approval, but JSX CEO Alex Wilcox said he expects it to be available by the fourth quarter, if not earlier, reported CNBC.
Customers will be able to using Starlink services free of charge on JSX planes and no login screens will be required to access the network, the jet service said
Musk’s SpaceX has been in talks with airlines to provide in-flight internet. The company has launched some 2,000 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit since 2019.
