US stocks ended higher after a volatile trading session on Tuesday as investors eagerly anticipate the Federal Reserve’s decision to hike interest rates.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose about 7.29 points, or 0.2%, to close at 33,128.79, after juggling between gains and losses in afternoon trade.
The S&P 500 advanced 20.10 points, or 0.5%, to finish at 4,175.48, while the Nasdaq Composite rose by 27.74 points, or 0.2%, to end at 12,563.76, after also wavering between gains and losses in the afternoon.
The 10-year Treasury yield fell 3.8 basis points Tuesday to 2.957%, after touching 3% for the first time since December 2018, on Monday.
Meanwhile, orders for U.S. manufactured goods rose by a stronger-than-expected 2.2% in April, the Commerce Department said Tuesday.
Shares of Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) rose 2% after the drugmaker posted better-than-expected first-quarter earnings on Tuesday, boosted by sales of its COVID-19 vaccine and antiviral Paxlovid.
Shares of Clorox (NYSE: CLX) rose nearly 3% after the company’s fiscal third-quarter results topped expectations.
Chegg Inc. (NYSE: CHGG) shares plummeted 30.3% after the online-education company slashed an annual forecast provided three months ago.
The Federal Reserve is expected to increase the interest rates by a half-percentage point to tighten financial conditions and counter inflation that's been running at 40-year highs.
