• The two nations have found a way to let companies buy Russian gas without breaching sanctions
Germany and Italy told companies they could open rouble accounts to keep buying Russian gas without breaching sanctions against Moscow following discussions with the European Union, reported Reuters.
Reuters talked to two sources who told the agency that German gas importers have been told by Berlin they could open rouble accounts to pay for Russian gas without violating sanctions, as long as the payments they make to Gazprombank are not in the Russian currency.
Reuters interviewed another source that told the agency that the Italian government has come to terms with the European Commission on how to buy Russian gas legally. Italian energy company Eni has begun proceedings to open two accounts, one in euros and one in roubles.
Last month, the EU issued a notice that companies in the bloc that open an account in rubles to pay for Russian gas would violate sanctions imposed by the Union.
But companies are seeking workarounds, and the bloc’s guidance document issued last week appeared to encourage them to do so.
