A Russian diplomat resigned from his position after calling the attacks on Ukraine, “bloody, witless and absolutely needless ignominy.”
Boris Bondarev, a diplomat at the Russian mission to the United Nations in Geneva, said in a LinkedIn post that he has never been “so ashamed” of his country, protesting against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“The aggressive war unleashed by Putin against Ukraine, and in fact against the entire Western world, is not only a crime against the Ukrainian people, but also, perhaps, the most serious crime against the people of Russia, with a bold letter Z crossing out all hopes and prospects for a prosperous free society in our country,” he wrote in the post.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russian people who are dissenting Moscow’s actions will be considered traitors.
Russian officials have not yet commented on the war—which Putin calls Russia’s “special operation.”
