• Ford issued its fifth recall since 2018 for same issue
• Recall includes over 2.9 million cars in US and 394,000 in Canada
Ford Motor Co (NYSE: F) is recalling more than 3.3 million cars in North America over a damaged or missing part that may prevent the vehicles from shifting into the intended gear and pose a rollaway risk.
In a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the carmaker said the recall covers various 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect and 2015-2018 Edge.
The recall includes more than 2.9 million cars in the US and 394,000 in Canada, among which Ford estimates 1% will have the issue.
A damaged or missing shift cable bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and Ford said, “Exiting a vehicle without the transmission in the park position and without application of the parking brake may allow the vehicle to roll, increasing the risk of injury or crash.”
The carmaker said it was aware of six incidents of alleged property damage and four reports of injuries related to the recalled vehicles.
The latest notice is Ford’s fifth recall over the issue since 2018. Ford previously recalled about 1.4 million vehicles worldwide.
On Tuesday, the automobile giant said it was recalling about 49,000 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles in the US as a battery part could overheat and result in a loss of propulsion power.
Ford also recalled 53,103 four-door Bronco manufactured in 2021-2022 as the passenger-side rear door may be opened from inside the vehicle when the child-safety lock is in the “ON” position.
Ford is leading all US carmakers this year, with 38 recall campaigns covering 6.6 million vehicles.
