European leaders are set to formally recognize Ukraine as a candidate for EU membership amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
“History is on the march,” European Union chief executive Ursula von der Leyen said, ahead of a two-day summit in Brussels. “I am talking about the wind of change that once again blows across our continent. With their applications, Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia are telling us that they want to change.”
Granting Ukraine EU candidacy is considered a major sign of support, but if granted as generally predicted, the process of joining the political and economic union may take years, and Ukraine would be asked to undertake significant reforms, CNBC stated.
To award candidate status, the EU's 27 member states must unanimously agree.
After a combined visit to Kyiv by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, there is growing support for awarding Ukraine EU candidate status.
