The G7 group of the world’s richest seven nations has in a strongly
worded statement promised
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy support “for as long as it takes,” a BBC
report has said.
The G7 group statement issued on the second day of a summit
in Germany also asked
Russia to stop blocking food exports from Ukraine's ports.
Addressing the summit on a video-link, Ukraine's president
appealed for more heavy weapons from Western allies.
G7 leaders are under pressure to be united in their approach
against increasing Russian aggression, BBC said.
Brutal and unprovoked
"We will continue to provide financial, humanitarian,
military and diplomatic support and stand with Ukraine for as long as it
takes," they said in the statement on Monday.
"We remain appalled by and continue to condemn the
brutal, unprovoked, unjustifiableand illegal war of aggression against Ukraine by Russia and aided by
Belarus."
Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US have
convened in Bavaria, Germany along with two representatives of the European
Union to discuss Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion
of the neighboring nation that has the potential of aggravating povertyaround the world.
The high-level talks occurred in the backdrop of escalated attacks
by the Russian forces on eastern Ukraine, where officials told BBC a busy
shopping centre was struck by a missile in the city of Kremenchuk, killing at
least two people.
Zelenskyy urged the Western allies to keep the pressure on
Russia with more sanctions.
In their joint statement, the G7 leaders said they remain
committed to "sustaining and intensifying" sanctions against Putin's
government and enablers in neighbouring Belarus. There will be sanctions on
gold and oil exports and also "targeted sanctions on those responsible for
war crimes."
