A ship carrying 7,000 tons of grain left from Ukraine's seized port of Berdyansk on Thursday, said the region's Moscow-appointed governor.
“After several months of inactivity, the first merchant ship left the Berdyansk Commercial Sea Port,” Evgeny Balitsky, the head of the pro-Russia administration, said on Telegram. “The safety of the dry cargo ship is provided by ships and boats of the Novorossiysk naval base of the Black Sea Fleet.”
The first grain shipment since the start of the war left from Berdyansk which is a port city in the Zaporizhzhia region of southeastern Ukraine.
Ukraine has accused Russia and its associates of stealing its grain, which has contributed to a worldwide food shortfall because of grain shipments being stopped at Ukrainian ports.
“Berdyansk Bay and the port itself are completely safe. And port workers and port equipment are ready for cargo transshipment,” the pro-Russia administrator said.
