US President Joe Biden said that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's departure will not jeopardize the international effort to help Ukraine.
Biden did not mention Johnson or his departure from Number 10 Downing Street, but he did declare that the US and UK remain the closest of friends and allies.
“The United Kingdom and the United States are the closest of friends and Allies, and the special relationship between our people remains strong and enduring,” Biden said in the statement, obtained by CBS News.
“I look forward to continuing our close cooperation with the government of the United Kingdom, as well as our Allies and partners around the world, on a range of important priorities, the president said.
“That includes maintaining a strong and united approach to supporting the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against Putin’s brutal war on their democracy, and holding Russia accountable for its actions.”
Johnson, who has been in office since 2019, resigned as Conservative Party leader on Thursday after two senior ministers and a slew of more than 50 members of the government resigned in the last week, claiming they no longer trusted the British leader.
The British PM said that he will stay in his position until a replacement is selected, which might take several weeks.
