Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said retaking of Snake Island sends a strong message to Russian forces that his nation cannot be broken.
“I want to express gratitude for the final stage of the struggle for Zmiinyi - our national flag was hoisted there,” Zelenskky said in his video address.
“And now let every Russian captain — whether of a ship or an aircraft — see the Ukrainian flag on Zmiinyi [Snake Island] and know that our state cannot be broken,” he said.
Russian soldiers have evacuated from Snake Island in the Black Sea off Ukraine's coast as a "gesture of goodwill,". Moscow took the island on the first day of the invasion, and it is located in the key maritime channels to Odesa and its neighboring ports.
On Thursday, Ukraine's Special Operations Forces announced that they had finished clearing the island, destroying 30 units of enemy equipment in the process.
