Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Europe needs to prepare for the possibility that Russia would shut off the gas supply.
“Now there can be no doubt that Russia will try not only to limit as much as possible but also to completely stop the supply of gas to Europe at the most urgent moment,” Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post. “This is what we need to prepare for now, this is what is being provoked now.”
Previously, Russia halted gas supply to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline for annual summer maintenance.
“From 11 July to 21 July 2022, Nord Stream AG will temporarily shut down both lines of its gas pipeline system for annual routine maintenance works,” said a notice on the pipeline operator’s website.
“Because every concession in such conditions is perceived by the Russian leadership as an incentive for further, stronger pressure,” said the Ukrainian leader. “Russia has never played by the rules in energy and will not play now unless it sees power.”
