Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS) is in discussions with the British Broadcasting Corp (BBC) for buying the streaming rights for the new “Doctor Who” series, Bloomberg reported on Friday, citing people with knowledge of the matter.
The report said the talks are in the early stages, and there’s no guarantee a deal will be reached.
If Disney acquires the right, Doctor Who series will be aired globally on the Disney+ streaming service, along with BBC, who will also stream the show.
Like other media companies, Disney is looking to expand its streaming portfolio of established entertainment properties as it builds its global service.
The series, which first appeared on television in 1963, follows the adventures of a time-traveling character known as the Doctor.
Earlier this month, the media giant said Kristen Finney would lead the international content curation team for Disney in a push to make more regional content for streaming.
As executive vice president, Finney will work on building a team to track and evaluate “content needs and appropriateness for Disney+ and Star/Star+”, the company said in a statement.
