The prevalence of depression – a sad mood that lasts for a long time and interferes with normal, everyday functioning – among children has increased by 89% from 2004 to 2020, while the rate of treatment has only nominally increased. 1 The prevalence of mental health conditions among adults has increased by 19% from 2008 to 2020, including nearly 21 million adults who have depression. 2 Rates of depression are higher among certain groups like younger adults, females and people who are multi-racial. 3
In the United States, suicide claimed the lives of almost 46,000 people in 2020. 5 It is the second leading cause of death for children aged 10–14 and adults aged 35–44, and the third leading cause of death for young people aged 15–24. 6
