NORTHBROOK, Ill. (AP) _ Allstate Corp. (ALL) on Wednesday reported a fourth-quarter loss of $284 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.
On a per-share basis, the Northbrook, Illinois-based company said it had a loss of $1.17. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to $1.36 per share.
The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of $1.37 per share.
The insurer posted revenue of $13.65 billion in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $13.55 billion.
For the year, the company reported a loss of $1.31 billion, or $5.22 per share, swinging to a loss in the period. Revenue was reported as $52.48 billion.
Allstate shares have declined 5.5% since the beginning of the year, while the S&P's 500 index has climbed slightly more than 7%. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $128.16, a climb of 8% in the last 12 months.
