The US government will soon announce a decision regarding baby formula imports to ease the ongoing shortage, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) told CNN on Monday.
FDA Commissioner Robert Califf provided no details, but President Joe Biden said last week he was working to allow more formulas to come in from other countries.
Califf said that offering this formula in U.S. stores “would have a big effect because we'll have access to a lot more formula from different manufacturers.”
Pandemic-induced supply chain issues have affected the domestic supply of formula since last year. In February, the largest baby formula manufacturer in the US, Abbott Nutrition, recalled several of its major formula brands and shut down a Michigan factory associated with tainted goods.
During the first week of May, 43% of baby formula supplies were out of stock across the US, as parents turned to sellers on Amazon and other routes to feed their children.
