The UK Defense Ministry said in its intelligence report that Russia now controls the majority of Severodonetsk.
Although the main road into the Severodonetsk pocket is most likely still under Ukrainian hands, Russia is making steady local victories owing to a high concentration of artillery.
“Crossing the Siverskyy Donets River - which is a natural barrier to its axes of advance – is vital for Russian forces as they secure Luhansk Oblast and prepare to switch focus to Donetsk Oblast,” MoD said in its report.
Potential crossing points include Severodonetsk and the neighboring town of Lysychansk, as well as near the newly seized Lyman. The river line is likely still held by Ukrainian forces in both sites, who have demolished existing bridges.
The ministry said in a tweet “It is likely Russia will need at least a short tactical pause to re-set for opposed river crossings and subsequent attacks further into Donetsk Oblast, where Ukrainian forces have prepared defensive positions.”
“To do so risks losing some of the momentum they have built over the last week,” it added.
