• Russia has issued multiple fines over Western tech companies
A Russian court slapped a fine of $260,000 (15 million roubles) on Alphabet's Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) for repeatedly failing to localize user data.
Moscow's Tagansky District Court said that Google had repeatedly failed to store the personal data of Russian users in databases on Russian territory, reported Reuters. Last year, Russia issued a similar fine on Google of $46,540 (3 million rubles) for the same reason.
Google moved some of its employees out of Russia after Moscow sent troops into Ukraine in late February.
In late May, Russia’s Federal Service for the Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) issued foreign tech companies including Google, Airbnb, Pinterest, Likeme, Twitch, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), and United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) for violating personal data laws.
Critics say that these measures by Moscow are an attempt to exert greater control over the internet, as the country rages war on Ukraine.
