The UK defense ministry in its intelligence report said that the war has accelerated the state’s long-term trajectory towards authoritarianism.
“In recent weeks, the Duma has started the process to introduce a 20-year sentence for Russians who fight against the Russian Federation,” the ministry said.
Speaking out against the invasion is also illegal and even though the majority of Russians tell pollsters that they favor the 'special military operation,' segments of the public actively and passively oppose it.
The ministry said in its update that the "Freedom for Russia Legion," which was mostly made up of Russians, almost probably fought alongside the Ukrainian forces. Some high-ranking Russian officials have almost certainly been sidelined for criticizing the war.
“Migration applications suggest that 15,000 Russian millionaires (in US dollars) are likely already attempting to leave the country,” MoD said in its tweet.
Personal opposition to the invasion and a desire to avoid the financial consequences of Russia's sanctions are quite possible motivations.
If this exodus continues, “it will likely exacerbate the war’s long-term damage to Russia’s economy,” the ministry said.
