Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv has begun exporting power to the European Union via Romania as Russia restricts gas supply to the EU.
“Today, another significant step in our rapprochement with the European Union took place - Ukraine launched a significant export of electricity to the territory of the EU, to Romania,” Zelenskyy said in his video address.
“And this is only the first stage. We are preparing to increase supply.”
Several European nations, particularly Italy and Germany, are highly dependent on Russian gas for energy but have been compelled to seek alternatives as Moscow reduces supply.
“At the expense of Ukrainian electricity, a significant part of the Russian gas consumed by Europeans can be replaced,” Ukraine’s President said. “That is, it is not just a question of export revenue for us, it is a question of security for the whole of Europe.”
According to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine's power export potential to Europe could reach 2.5 gigawatts.
