EU signs deal with Azerbaijan to double gas imports by 2027
- EU is looking for alternate suppliers to Russia because of Ukraine's invasion
The European Commission on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding with Azerbaijan to increase Azeri natural gas imports to at least 20 billion cubic meters per year by 2027.
“Today, with this new Memorandum of Understanding, we are opening a new chapter in our energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, a key partner in our efforts to move away from Russian fossil fuels,” said President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
The EU is looking for alternate suppliers to Russia because of Ukraine's invasion.
“Azerbaijan is a crucial energy partner for us that has always been reliable,” von der Leyen said during the signing ceremony in Baku, Azerbaijan's capital.
President of the European Commission further said “we commit to reducing methane emissions through the entire gas supply chain.”
