The city of Mariupol is at risk of a massive cholera outbreak as Russia struggles to deliver basic public services to people of Ukrainian districts seized by Russia, said UK Defense Ministry in its intelligence report.
Access to potable drinking water has been patchy, and substantial disruptions to telephone and internet services have persisted.
“Ukraine suffered a major cholera epidemic in 1995, and has experienced minor outbreaks since, especially around the Azov Sea coast - which includes Mariupol,” MoD said in its tweet.
Mariupol's medical services are likely already nearing collapse; a significant cholera outbreak would compound this, the ministry said.
Meanwhile, fighting rages on around Severodonetsk. Russia has retaken control of the majority of the city, but its forces have made little headway in encircling the larger territory from the north and south.
