• About 12% of the airlines’ flights from the Newark airport will be affected due to the cuts
United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAL) announced on Thursday it will cut about 50 daily flights from Newark airport next month to control flight delays.
About 12% of the airlines’ flights from the Newark Liberty International Airport will be affected due to the cuts announced by United, which will be effective from July 1. The cuts will only be applicable to domestic flights.
US airlines are reducing the number of flights in an attempt to control flight delays due to spike in air travel.
United said reduction in flights is due to airport construction and air traffic control (ATC) staffing.
United shares fell 4.9% in afternoon trading to $34.93.
Reuters reported that an email sent on Thursday to United employees by Chief Operations Officer Jon Roitman, said the cuts "should help minimize excessive delays and improve on-time performance."
