European Union leaders on Thursday agreed to make Ukraine and Moldova formal applicants for EU membership.
At a conference in Brussels, leaders from the EU's 27 member states obtained the necessary unanimous consent to award Ukraine candidate status. This starts a process that might take years or perhaps decades.
“Your countries are part of our European family. And today’s historic decision by leaders confirms that” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a tweet.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the European Union for awarding Kyiv candidate status, saying it marked the start of Europe's new history.
Ukraine requested EU membership on February 24, less than a week after Moscow invaded.
Countries seeking EU membership must fulfill a slew of economic and political requirements, including adherence to the rule of law and other democratic norms. Ukraine will also need to address entrenched government corruption and implement other changes, AP stated.
