The NATO military alliance is scheduled to meet on Tuesday in Madrid, Spain, with the Ukraine conflict at the top of the agenda.
“At the summit, we will strengthen our forward defenses. We will enhance our battlegroups in the eastern part of the alliance up to brigade levels,” NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg told a press conference.
“We will transform the NATO response force and increase the number of high-readiness forces to well over 300,000.”
Stoltenberg said that “allies will state clearly that Russia poses a direct threat to our security, to our values, to the rules-based international order.”
The conference takes place as Russia makes modest but considerable progress in eastern Ukraine.
