Ukraine now has a "very clear European perspective," but the EU membership will take time and effort said the EU executive's president in the country's parliament on Friday.
"Ukraine now has a very clear European perspective. And Ukraine is a candidate country to join the European Union, something that seemed almost unimaginable just five months ago," Ursula von der Leyen told lawmakers.
"There is a long road ahead but Europe will be at your side every step of the way, for as long as it takes, from these dark days of war until the moment you cross the door that leads into our European Union," she said.
Last week, at a conference in Brussels, leaders from the EU's 27 member states obtained the necessary unanimous consent to award Ukraine candidate status. This starts a process that might take years or perhaps decades.
Zelenskyy in the parliament said Ukraine must join the EU as soon as possible.
“Our path to membership must not take years, decades. We have to cover this path quickly. To what extent it is possible is up to us,” the Ukrainian leader said. “We have to do our part of the job ideally to enable our friends in the European Union to make another historic decision for us just as quickly, in the same consolidated manner.”
